Shadow of theVampire

As we approach the climax, you may remember early in The Historian a mention of the 1922 silent-film version of Dracula, Nosferatu: eine Symphonie des Grauens (usually known simply as Nosferatu). Notably, as mentioned in The Historian, this film was the first appearance of the belief that vampires could be killed by exposure to sunlight.

Nosferatu was directed by one of the great silent film directors in early cinema, the Acadamy-Award winning (Sunrise, 1927) German director F.W.Murnau. Murnau hadn't received the rights to make a film adaption of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. To try getting around this, he changed some of the main character names and plot points, such as Count Dracula became Count Orlok and the previously mentioned idea that sunshine killed vampires. The very term "vampire" didn't escape editing, as it became "nosferatu".
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; photo source

Even with these changes, Bram Stoker's estate didn't take kindly to the adaptation and sued, with the court ordering the destruction of the film. However, the film had already been shipped and copies survived. The film is in the public domain in the US, but can be seen in a number of different variations and editions, some of which change the character names to correspond back to Stoker's novel.

Legends from the production of Nosferatu include that Max Shreck, who played Count Orlok in the film, was not an actor but instead an actual vampire. Despite this of course not being true, these rumors lead to the creation of the film Shadow of the Vampire (2000).

The 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, plays off the legend that Max Shreck, the actor portraying Count Orlok in Nosferatu, was an actual vampire rather than an actor playing a vampire. In the film, director W. F. Murnau, portrayed by John Malkovich, finds a mysterious person who he calls Max Shreck to play the vampire Count Orlok. Max Shreck/Orlok, portrayed by Willem Dafoe, is not an actor or even a human at all: he is a vampire pretending to be a human actor playing a vampire.

<img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-2QLWGRT8yg/TMZSJR6jNdI/AAAAAAAAAK8/5__j4iE7uqw/s320/ShadowoftheVampireposter.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; (source)

The film shows the fictional production of Nosferatu as the crew begins to have suspicions about the mysterious Shreck/Orlok, especially when it's discovered that Shreck remains in full costume and character at all times, even when they're done with filming for the day. Shadow of the Vampire has great performances, from the entire cast, especially from Malkovich's Murnau and Dafoe's Shreck/Orlok.

Neither are perfect films, but for any fan of horror or silent cinema, Nosferatu is a must watch with the fictional retelling of the story behind the film, Shadow of the Vampire, if only for the acting and ingenuity, a great treat, especially for the Halloween season.

Yours in profoundest grief,

Coffee and a Book Chick

Tedious & Only a couple questions this week...

Paul and Helen have had quite an incredible journey together, and in this short section, they are accompanied by the watchful Ranov as they tour Bulgaria and interact with Stoichev to learn more about the monks who have written about the transport of an incredible treasure, that could be Vlad Tepes' body or his head, and the hope that the two are reunited. I was also incredibly saddened to hear about the "amnesia" that Professor Rossi also experienced, separating him from Helen's mother forever.

We're getting closer to the truth...Last week, the general response was that it seemed to be a much slower point than the other sections. What do you think of the story's momentum thus far in this week's section?

What has jumped out at you that you'd like to discuss with the group?

"I am glad to have the chance to talk with anyone who is interested in our medieval history," Stoichev said to me. "Perhaps it would be interesting for you and Miss Rossi to see a holiday that celebrates two of our great medieval figures. Tomorrow is the day of Kiril and Methodii, creators of the great Slaonic alphabet. In English you would say Cyril and Methodius -- you call it Cyrilic, do you not? We say kirilitsa, for Kiril, the monk who invented it." that there are three types of eyes that can cause harm:

Unknowing Eye - jealously looked on another and wished they could have those fortunes

Intentional Eye - jealously looked on another and specifically wished bad luck to fall on another

Invisible Eye - true evil and the most severe form

The general understanding of who is more susceptible to the Evil Eye are children, women, and animals -- those considered as "weaker" to the influence. It is believed that the recipient of the Evil Eye experiences a "drying up" of good within the recipient -- health.

So, how does one protect oneself against the Evil Eye? The below amulet, also known as a Nazar can be found in Turkey -- they are in houses, worn as jewelry, put in cars. Anywhere where it's thought one might be exposed to jealousy.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Nnsg0X_fgUw/TKoBqUNsOMI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/UTXUOe8pOsg/s1600/Nazar+Amulet+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; he half stood and with a scowl of indignation began to berate the Gypsy. It was not difficult to understand his tone and gestures, which invited her in no uncertain terms to take herself off. She glared at all of us and withdrew as suddenly as she'd appeared, vanishing among the other pedestrians. Turgut sat down again, looking wide-eyed at Helen, and after a moment, he rummaged in his jacket pocket and drew out a small object, which he placed next to her plate. It was a flat blue stone about an inch long, set with white and paler blue, like a crude eye. Helen blanched when she saw it and reached as if by instinct to touch it with her forefinger. Take a look at the below -- two emblems of the Order of the Dragon, the secret society formed to battle back against the Ottoman Empire.

! Along that same vein, several artistic references are mentioned throughout this next section -- did you notice that Rembrandt is mentioned multiple times? Not only as the name of Paul's cat that is brutally murdered, but also even in Barley identifying a Rembrandt-esque inspiration on the street where the narrator's house is.

It's clear at this point in the story that we're diving deeper into the mystery, although we don't yet know, as the characters don't, what the true nature of it is, other than what can be seen on the surface. What we know still is that Professor Rossi has disappeared, and in order to find him, they must find Dracula as well, and uncover if it is true that he still lives amongst us today.

Paul and Helen travel to Istanbul to start their research and quest. Sultan Mehmed II plays a critical piece in this section as well -- a quick historical check identified that Mehmed did partner with Vlad Tepes' brother, Radu, shortly after the year 1463 to fight Vlad and avenge the losses of the Ottoman soldiers, and Vlad had to escape to save his life.

Have you wondered what the places look like?

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Why do you think the timing was constructed in this manner for the first readers in 2005?

Did you notice that the narrator's name is not identified? We know the name of everyone else but not her name. Why is that?

The narrator is obviously much more mature than her sixteen years would normally imply, and especially in comparison to her peers during 1973. Why do you feel that the author chose such a young age to represent this character who is learning such incredibly unbelievable information?

When it is learned that "Dracula lives among us today," (p. 26), does this truly mean that Dracula is alive amongst us, or merely that folklore and superstition keep his legend and name alive?

Whoever receives the book encounters grave danger. Are they putting themselves in danger willingly because of their own interest in the research, or does it naturally come about from a true evil that has selected them?

Professor Rossi's friend, Hedges, is attacked and suffers a stroke as a result. As Professor Rossi waits for help, he asks Hedges who attacked him and Hedges's responds with a message that, "he will brook no trespass." What does that mean?

On p. 88, Paul states that he's not interested in the occult, only that he's interested in finding Rossi. first read this five years ago, and this is the first read for Tedious & Brief! Here's an overall schedule and we'd like to start it in two weeks so that we can break the book up into a little over 100 pages each week and to finish by Sunday, October 31st for Halloween.
